Look how fucking happy all those dudes & ladies are on that album cover! Why? you might ask. Because you're an idiot who don't know shit from shit, sherlock! Lol, just jokin' mate, calm down, man.

In any case, in our last MPB installment, guess who was criminally not represented? Only the greatest band of all time, NOVOS BAIANOS. And Acabou Chorare is their masterpiece. I have no qualms saying that it's probably the best album of the 70's anywhere (cos I've listened to them all, I post on a blog ya know!).

GREYMACHINE is the new project of justin broadrick of jesu/godflesh/final et al. along with aaron turner from isis and the two other guys from jesu. as gay as that sounds this shit actually owns really fucking hard. honestly this might be some of the best stuff justin's ever put out. this record is every bit as brutal as the early SWANS albums, mixed with some dub and noise influence. listen to the sample track 'vultures descend' on myspace to get an idea of how much this shit rules. and that's not even the best track on the album.

this record has my vote for best of 09 so far.

Marion Brown - Porto Nova (1968)

Dynamic, energetic, slightly melancholic free jazz from one of the genre's finest and sadly most overlooked alto saxophonists. The production on this record is a little weird, mixing Hans Bennink's admittedly excellent drumming ahead of everything else, but the quality of the music more than makes up for it. An oft-ignored classic.

GERALDO PINO AND THE HEARTBEATS - HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY: COOL PROTO-AFROBEAT FROM AFRICA

Here's a cool album (I'm not positive if it's a compilation or not) by an African Guy named Geraldo Pino, who the great Fela Kuti himself cited as an enormous influence and inspiration for his musical output. It shows, you can definitely hear a lot of the elements that would come to make Afrobeat what it was sort of coalescing on Heavy Heavy Heavy. It's generally funky as hell and there's even some psych rocky stuff going on. Even completely disregarding how highly Fela thought of him and its infulence on future music, this is just some killer stuff and a great collection of songs just on its own merit.

so theres this guy most of you probably know as superstar dubstep producer The Bug. his name's Kevin Martin. he has a goatee in a lot of his promo pics (see fig. 1). it seems like a lot of ppl dont realize that he's been very prolific through the 90s and early 00s in genres other than (and many that influenced) dubstep. so i decided i'd share some of his other projects w/ yall.

TECHNO ANIMAL:

this project has a name that has aged very poorly but it's still cool! people describe it as industrial hip-hop but i think that applies mostly to just the earlier albums which had a very tense, industrial atmosphere. this album, Brotherhood of the Bomb, has really fuckin heavy bass and features collaborators such as Justin Broadrick of Godflesh and Jesu, Vast Aire, and the dudes from Dälek.

GOD:

sick free-jazz-influenced doomy industrial metal. with justin broadrick on guitar and john zorn doin his shit. two albums here: 1992's "Possession", and 1994's "The Anatomy of Addiction". Possession is a lot more droning and sparse, while the tracks on Anatomy of Addiction feel more like songs. if you have even a passing interest in doom metal or jazz metal or heavy industrial shit like Swans, check this out.

ice is like the halfway point between GOD and Techno Animal. lots of hip-hop and dub influence, but with the whole industrial noise shit and heavy sludgy guitars. another very cool project, and once again justin broadrick is a collaborator.

King Snake Roost - Three Albums

These are the only LPs that KSR released, though they had other tracks on comps and some singles. Australian noise rock band, they ripped out an amazing, pounding sound that easily hangs with the best AmRep stuff (their first two records were released on Abberrant, but then re-released on AmRep, along with their last). From Barbarism to Chrisian Manhood isn't full of truly classic material like the other two records, but still good.

壞女兒 (BAD DAUGHTER) - 小太陽 (TINY SUN)

I know a lot of people probably look at my whole thing with Mandarin-language music and the bands I'm constantly splurging about and go "oh yeah look it's another indie band cribbing the western indie formula. cool, how exciting." That's probably a valid assessment of certain bands, but Bad Daughter's second and final album is not just good among Taiwanese indie pop, it's hands down one of the best indie pop records I've ever heard. Every song on this album is pretty much perfectly constructed, the sentimentality is never laid on too thick, and despite some of the tracks being relatively long for pop songs, they never overstay their welcome. There hasn't been an indie pop record this good out of Taiwan since it was released in 2003 and unfortunately this was Bad Daughter's final record before disbanding in 2006. So listen to it because it is amazing ok.

People - People(1994)

People was an Israeli death/grind/other stuff band from Israel. They formed in 1992, recorded this demo in 1994, broke up, then as far as I know never participated in any other projects. The demo is a comedy mashup of death/grind and some bizarre samples. To my ears, it's similar to Dripping - Disintegration Of Thought Patterns... only without trying to be serious. It's also sort of reminiscent of some of the stuff that Czech bands like Contrastic and Four Seats For Invalides put out more recently. Listen to this if you want some laughs.


People - People(1994)

Les Calamités - C'est complet

Les Calamités were a group of teenage girls who made french pop tracks during the 1980s in a yé-yé/60s English pop style, including covers of 'the kids are alright', 'teach me to shimmy', and 'the boy from new york city'. This cd collects their entire 16-song catalogue, with their minor hit in the French charts, 'Velomoteur', full of infectious, naive, happy pop fun.

HERE A POST ABOUT PUNK AND POP

These three albums are quite different but all have elements of punk and pop in them; while ALL has even been referred to as "orthodox pop-punk" I don't think any of them sound much like each other, or like pop-punk is "supposed" to sound. Definite rock influence in Chisel (featuring Ted Leo of Ted Leo And The Pharmacists) and hardcore influence in Hellbender (featuring Al Burian of Milemarker/Burn Collector zine).

The ALL record is a live album of mostly their best stuff. This was Hellbender's 2nd album; I haven't heard the first (eponymous) album and didn't like the "indie" (1998 incarnation of the word) direction of their followup (final) album, Con Limon, quite as much. This is Chisel's first record of two and I don't have the other one, think I'll get that now.

Moondog

For those unfamiliar with him, Moondog was one of the most unique, and enigmatic musical figures of the twentieth century. He lived as a street musician in New York for 20 years, dressing only in his homemade clothes, an homage to Thor, and playing instruments he created.
His music can be described as a mix of classical and Jazz, with occasional spoken word poetry. You have to hear it to appreciate how amazing it is.

Cherubs - Heroin Man

Cherubs released some great albums, and Heroin Man is no exception. This is hard, heavy noise rock, and though it's not one of my favorite albums, it's difficult to not appreciate the level of brutality these guys achieved on tracks like Wornout Balls. There's definite trance elements on this album; many songs are structured with a deep, pounding noise/sludge background and built up with slight variations and freakin' angry vocals. Weird, wild.

-they aren't a band, they are an 'International art performance and music group.'
-they might take themselves a bit too seriously

but whatever, it's good pop with some 'latin' feel. i dont know how to describe music, listen to it on their website instead (second album on the page). i recommend the waves (no not wavves), its my favorite.

Deadguy - Fixation On A Coworker

Continuing with the metalcore theme, here's Deadguy, who gets namedropped a lot in conjunction with a few other bands but definitely had a unique sound from the staples of the genre. This album came out on Victory(!) and was anything but characteristic of the "Victory Sound" at the time. Heavy later-era Black Flag influence, esp. in the vocals, and bands like Human Remains (who shared members) and Dillinger Escape Plan clearly took some cues from these guys. A term that was once used was "chaotic hardcore". This is their only real full-length, afterward two members split to form Kiss It Goodbye (two Deadguy EPs were later recorded with other members).

Hi. So i'm seeing that a lot of phiz has not been exposed to this lil fella by the name of James George Thirlwell, aka Jim Foetus, aka Clint Ruin, aka about a million other pseudonyms used over the past thirty years or so. He is in my opinion the greatest heroin success story of all time, having single-handedly created some of the most fascinating, challenging, and fun music under the 'industrial' umbrella. And I do mean single-handedly -- nearly all of his studio work is done solo.

Anyway i thought i'd share what i think are his three greatest albums: Hole, Nail and Thaw. Each brings together several different styles and genres, ranging from surf-rock to orchestral to manic industrial-tinged big-band. can't think of anything else to say here, so check 'em out!

Corrupted - Se Hace Por Los Suenos Asesinos  Japanese sludge/doom. Acoustic work blended in with the normal sludge and doom, a lil' bit of drone. Atmospheric, at most cubic.

 and he did, and it was fantastic.

Aldebaran - Dwellers in Twilight  Doom, with a succulent sludge smattering. According to the guy who wrote their last.fm description, "Aldebaran’s music can be described as crushing blackened doom," so if you were wondering, yes, 

you can call it crushing blackened doom. Hog wild.
